“Vortex of Love” Revisited PDF Print E-mail

Colin J. McMahon recently graduated from Institute of Production and Recording (Minneapolis) and sent me a great mix of “Vortex” that I had recorded at the school for a vocal recording class. We later met and reviewed tracks and final ideas. He then proceeded to deliver an amazing final mix of my “hippie-Gospel-beat-box-vocal-love-tracks”.

Thanks Colin, and welcome to the whacky world of music production – your musical future is in your steady hands and talented production insights!

The Dominican Republic is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been lucky enough to experience.

The people are so wonderful and welcoming!

I have had the pleasure (before and after the “re-discovery-vacation-rush” that this paradise is) to relax and have fun in Santa Domingo, Boca Chica, Punta Cana, and other historic Caribbean destinations that Columbus and the early travelers found with the 1st peeps – as it was at that time.

We are not so separate after all! We know our origins and we try/need to get our stuff mixed-up in a good way. My niece is currently a diplomat in Santa Domingo for USA. The difficult times in Haiti makes us realize the importance of the giving “family of man/woman”.

This song is my (Axel, Dan, and Alex too) version of a true Caribbean Fiesta Groove to celebrate fun and beautiful times. I dedicate it to the soul of Hispaniola: Haiti and Dominican Republic and hope that joyful music celebrates the great and the possibilities for this incredible island.

“Gotta Have It” and “What You Do To Me” PDF Print E-mail

Kyle Wood had this great track “Gotta Have It” that had such a Prince sound feel. I recorded all the vocals at IPR school for a vocal recording class. Great input from Dik Shopteau and his class – thanks!

Deevo added some cool guitar tracks and we went with a “Prince meets the marching band at the merry-go-round calliope” kind of groove for the intro and hook, along with dreamy verses. “Please help me, help me, I’m on fire for you!”

“What You Do To Me” came to me while I was in DC waiting for cab at a hotel. A beautiful woman “spinning in her chocolate wave” got out of her “metallic Escalade” with letters in her hand and her bag of tricks as she greeted her friend “Tommy Domino”. The rest came as I wrote the song on the hotel’s piano. “Buy a Marquis on that full moon” due to her large ring and a full moon night. We tried to get the bongos to sound like a Marvin Gaye groove. R&B in my Black Irish style with Axel’s great strings arrangement!

Take a cool groove from Kyle Wood, add a rappin’ dude, write incoherent lyrics, and add a violin/operatic breakdown in the intro and Austrian strings from Axel, and what do you get?

“Turn It Down”  just one more time…I heard you the first time!

Heartaches PDF Print E-mail

Sometimes it’s just too much info, but people tell me they like it…

I was working on a guitar tune for a few months (no laughing, since I’m the worst guitar player ever) and I had a cool Joni Mitchell 5ths kinda tuning going on. One night when I opened ITUNES, I found a previous tune that kyle wood sent me, and wahlah, my lame-ass guitar tune (so inspired previously by kyle’s track) jived!

So

I took kyle’s tracks and opened with my lame guitar, and then axel took it to the London symphony and opened a “tuning” intro with London audience assembling in the hall, and the rest is history.

Lyrics are “other-worldly” inspired.

I write down the most interesting things I hear people say – what an easy way to get great words and I combine my “feels”.

So many people dealing with heartaches right now, and of every stripe…blues, money, loneliness, despair, relationships, physical, surgery, whatever!

Lord knows I know!

COQUI

COQUI (the tree frog from Puerto Rico at my son’s Ian’s wedding)

When the heartaches,

for the Soul’s sake

And when hope’s late

You seal your fate

I took the bait

Now there’s no mistake

It’s guilt in a box all wrapped up in hearts of space

And a bad drama-rama

Slaying owls…the heartaches

Facing fowls OHHHHHH

The heartaches

When does it become yesterday night??

With the add-ons, widows, and token males

And psychic psychos

For the taking

For the making

In a shuffle…. emotional oceans…. cry in BIG SKY

Is there a place where we get honest for our soul’s sake????????????

You took the bait there’s no escape The heartaches… the heartaches… For my soul’s sake
